Super Shot saves the town from cancer

Luke becomes a comic book creator

“ He hopes to inspire other kids through Super Shot’s tales of courage and strength. ”

Oh, no. It’s the evil monster, The Virus, who draws his power from sick people and stops them from getting treatment. Here comes the invincible doctor, Dr. Shrink, and his sidekick Super Shot – the boy with cancer – ready to fight this villain and bring the town back to health.

Luke as always turned to comic books for entertainment and inspiration. The valiant superheroes continue to revive his courageous spirit. And Luke has definitely needed the strength.

Born with a heart defect, Luke underwent open-heart surgery when he was only five days old. When his doctors estimated a 20 percent chance of survival it became obvious Luke already had superhero strength as this infant overcame those odds and thrived.

But Luke’s hero cape was needed again three years later when he was diagnosed with leukemia – another life-threatening medical condition. Never fear, Luke’s comic book characters come to the rescue. During his chemotherapy Luke tapped into his creativity thinking up stories and sketching characters for comics.

Upon meeting his Make-A-Wish® Middle Tennessee volunteers, Luke already knew his one true wish: to create an original comic book to share with other kids.

“I wanted to help kids understand they shouldn’t be scared of doctors,” Luke says.

Thanks to the wish team and its sponsors, Luke and his family are off to New York to visit the Marvel Comics headquarters. There, Luke shows his sketches to professional comic artist Ryan Dunlavey. Together they develop the characters and storyline for the comic book.

Dr. Shrink, Super Shot and The Virus are brought to life. The original comic book Super Shot is created.

Luke wants Dr. Shrink’s character to show the kids that doctors aren’t trying to hurt them, but to save them. He hopes to inspire other children through Super Shot’s tales of superhero courage and strength as it inspired him, keeping them positive and ready to fight – like his character Super Shot.

I might be sick, but life’s not over and I’ll never stop fighting! ”
