Dominic smiles as he fills his shopping cart with toys. He is on a shopping spree ... not really for himself, but for kids at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh at UPMC.
People at the hospital know Dominic well. When he was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2012, he spent many days at the hospital for treatments. And his visits to the toy treasure chest brought him joy.
When Make-A-Wish volunteers visited Dominic, he told them he wanted to make other kids happy. He wanted to fill up the hospital’s toy treasure chest. Dominic shopping spree takes him to his favorite places to stock up on toys. Once he has everything he needs, he heads back to the hospital to deliver the newly purchased toys. He walks hand-in-hand with his little brother down the hospital corridor; the two boys place the toys in the treasure chest one by one. Dominic’s physicians and hospital staff are present to thank him and celebrate his donation.
All of Dominic’s donated toys have a sticker label that reads “Donated by Dominic.”
Dominic's wish is certain to live on: Kids will see the stickers on the toys and know that someone who cared stepped forward to help them.
And Dominic may have looked at his wish as an obvious choice – but one day, he'll realize the magnitude of his generosity and what an incredible example he set for the world. He'll have numerous media stories and videos to remind him of how he put the needs of others in front of his own.
